Training Programs We Held for You in 2024
Snippets from Newsreel Asia’s Third Year
Dear Readers,
As the year winds down, we're excited to share with you another part of our journey at Newsreel Academy, where we've been training journalists and also members of our audience community, possibly including you.
After all, storytelling—whether through text, photos, or video—isn’t just for mass communication; it’s a powerful tool in all forms of communication, whether you’re writing an email, sharing an incident or a special moment with a friend, or crafting a social media post. It’s truly a life skill.
Newsreel Academy: Empowering Journalists & Storytellers
Newsreel Academy is the educational arm of Newsreel Asia. The first batch of the Academy started in 2021 as an on-ground fellowship. However, with the onset of COVID-19, we transitioned to an online mode. The shift not only ensured safety but also enabled participation from across India and South Asia. Over the past three years, we have conducted 10 training programs, engaging about 250 young journalism students, working journalists, communication professionals and film enthusiasts from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Our Participants’ Feedback
Andleeb Shadab, a journalist from India, shared: “The course was really insightful. I loved learning how storytelling and narration can be used as effective tools for reporting, especially in times when apathy is widespread. The classes were engaging and easy to follow, even for someone like me with no prior background in journalism.”
Asif Aqeel, a participant from Pakistan, noted: “I have started thinking of starting my own Youtube channel on Pakistani Christians using the methodologies of New Journalism.”
To ensure equal opportunities, we offered scholarships to individuals from marginalised communities, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and religious minorities.
Newsreel Academy’s alumni have formed a close-knit community, staying connected through a WhatsApp group. To strengthen these bonds, we host annual in-person alumni meetups at the Newsreel Asia office. Alumni from other cities and countries can join us via Zoom.

We Offered courses in:
New Journalism: Focuses on the art of journalistic storytelling with an emphasis on the visual medium.
Video Production: Covers the technical aspects of production, including camera operations, audio and editing principles.
This year, we also launched Mindscapes, a webinar series for alumni and our audience. Notable sessions included: Email Newsletters: Building Personal Relationships with Readers by journalist Ankita Apurva, and Understanding the Right to Information Act in India by lawyer Abhay Jain.
In 2025, we plan to introduce more specialised courses and expand Newsreel Academy as a leading journalism education platform in South Asia.
